But launching a viral campaign can be difficult. You have to figure out what is going to be your unique “hook” that will enthuse your audience to voluntarily share information with their friends in a manner that will help to promote your offering.  It’s a fine line between spreading your marketing message without appearing like a blatant advertisement that is most challenging.

What is Viral Marketing?

Viral marketing is a vehicle/tool that influences individuals to pass on a message to others thereby increasing the message’s exposure. This can be anything from a funny YouTube video clip through to a useful tool on your website.

The reason it’s called viral marketing, is simple, if its done properly, it really does spread like a virus. It takes on a life of its own, and it just keeps going and going.

So what makes a great viral campaign, here are a few pointers:

Be gentle – Don’t try to shove your marketing message down the audience’s throat.

Play the emotional card - Get your target audience to pass the message on by working on the individuals emotions humour, get them laughing about it.  Make them angry about it so they send it on.

Be different – Make sure your message shouts louder that the numerous amount of clatter that people are faced with every day.

Don’t set your sights too high - Don’t place any restrictions on your viral campaign, and don’t complicate the sharing process. If you start asking for too much out of your audience your viral campaign will fail.

Continuity is the key - If your viral campaign is successful you need to follow it up with something else that holds the audience’s attention. A sequel perhaps that adds to the initial message?
